Constipation:

The term ‘constipation’ refers to a change in daily bowel habits, particularly a decrease in the number or consistency of bowel movements, or pain or difficulty passing stools.  In most cases constipation occurs because there is too little fibre or water in the diet.  It may also occur as a result of bowel diseases, muscle and nerve disorders, or as a side effect of some medications.  Stress is also a contributor to constipation.

Eating a high fibre diet, drinking plenty of water, particularly warm or room temperature water, adequate exercise, and bowel retraining can relieve constipation. (f or more on bowel retraining – check out Annie’s Bowel Health seminars – see details in this website).

Nutritional supplements:  Large doses of Vitamin C can have a laxative effect.  Psyllium seeds and flax seeds and chia seeds can be very useful in preventing constipation as they provide bulk and soften the stool.

Herval remedies for constipation include dandelion and milk thistle, which increase bile flow.  Aloe vera is also useful.  Stimulant laxative herbs such as senna and Cascara Sagrada can be useful in re-establishing bowel function, but should not be used long term as they can damage the bowel and lead to dependency.

I refer to this as lazy bowel.  You want your bowels to be moving regularly as a result of lifestyle practises that you have set up.
